Telstra Research Laboratories

I spent about 18 months at TRL working under Andy Davison and Rob Sewell. My main interests there (those that I can talk about at present) were:

Wireless Hotspots
This idea cropped up when a bunch of three or four of us were sitting around discussing wireless mesh networks (before Melbourne Wireless came into being).

This one actually managed to get off the ground, and I got two bites at the cherry - once in the initial conceptual phases when the idea was still being kicked around at TRL, and again after I moved to Telstra Security Architecture and ended up being the security architect assigned to the project. Good fun.

You'll see Telstra Wireless Hotspots at lots of MacDonald's, Rydges hotels and heaps of other places around the country. Yep - that was us.

Of course, there was the personal side as well. Climbing onto the roof of Pete, Rhys and Roger's townhouse to rig a probably-legal antenna in order to set up a wireless link with a mate a couple of km away was good fun, too...

Location, Context and Identity
An extension of my honours thesis. Building context-aware software that will do intelligent things according to where you are, what you're doing, who you're with etc. More than that I can't really say, except that my Location Whiteboard probably doesn't exist any more.

Anti-Spam Email Solution
Don't know if this will ever launch - it seems to be the project they throw to the new graduates each successive year. It could have been launched a long time ago, and could still be a very cool product. If only...

SMS To-Do
An afternoon's rebellion turned into an incredibly useful little tool... Send a text to a certain number and it will fire off an Outlook task request. It's amazing what you can do with full access to an SMSC...

SMS Find
"Find me a pub somewhere close..." Wouldn't it be nice? And wasn't it easy? Very cool application that would locate pretty much anything you needed, tell you the closest instance of it and even tell you how to get there. Now, if only it could only go and fetch the beer and pizza for you...

Other cool stuff
There's heaps of other cool stuff that I got to do, learn and generally mess with whilst I was at TRL. Unfortunately I can't talk about the rest of it yet or they'll sic the corporate lawyers onto me. Maybe once the products have launched...
