About uglybugger
Why "The Cave"?
Why a cave? Why not? Have you ever seen my bedroom? Or my study? They're dark, gloomy and eerily lit by the LEDs on my servers. Oh, and a nasty, bad-tempered creature lives somewhere therein.
About uglybugger
My primary schooling was at Wellers Hill State School until year 6, when my family moved to Chambers Flat. There, my younger brothers and I enrolled at Logan Reserve State School. There were around 200 students, total, in years 1-7, so it was pretty small as schools go. I was only there for a year, but I enjoyed the time.
The next step was to Canterbury College, Waterford. Whether or not this was a good step in terms of education is debatable, but at least I made a number of very good friends from there.
Nominally, Canterbury was responsible for my schooling until the end of year 9. Effectively, my parents were responsible for it as Canterbury's contribution really went only as far as meaning well.
Year 10 saw me enrolled at Brisbane Grammar School, from which I then graduated in 1996. BGS is still the best school in the state - please don't argue; look at the students' results over the years - and the time I spent there was both rewarding and enjoyable.
After graduating from Brisbane Grammar School, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Information Technology at the University of Queensland. I completed my degree, with first class honours, at the end of 2000.
After finishing university I moved to Melbourne to take a position at the New Wave - Innovation group that had been formed as an offshoot from Telstra Research Laboratories. After about six months in NWI, I moved into Mobility Solutions within TRL proper.
Once TRL started having its budget squeezed, I jumped ship into Telstra's Security Architecture group, where I stayed for 18 months. My work was mainly lots of architectural work on new products and services before Telstra released them to the public.
When Syndia graduated from Med at Monash, I left Telstra and we both moved back to Brisbane.
